How to Sound Breathy?

The breathy sound is created by allowing your vocal cords to not close fully when speaking – decompressing them. This allows some air to come out as you speak creating the breathy voice effect.

To master breathy voice you ought to learn to control your respiratory system and breathing through the diaphragm as you will be required to output more air when speaking in a breathy tone.

How to attain a breathy voice?

To achieve a breathy voice you have to lower compression in your voice. When we speak vocal cords are vibrating due to air passing through them. Without compression in vocal cords, no sound would be generated.

However, when speaking with a breathy voice we allow some air to come through without causing vibrations in our vocal cords. Therefore, to attain a breathy voice you have to decompress your vocal cords and make them a bit lax but still maintain some vibration.

How to manage breath output?

To master a breathy voice you need to be able to manage your breath output. Irregular breath output will cause you to sound inconsistent.

Try maintaining the same breathy tone without fluctuating breath output while continually speaking. You should aspire to maintain the same breathy tone throughout.

Exercise for controlling vocal cords compression

Vocal cords when producing compressed “Gee” sound.

Produce “Gee-Hee” sound to learn to control your vocal cords. When producing “Gee” sound your vocal cords compress to create a clean sharp sound.

Vocal cords when producing uncompressed and breathy “Hee” sound.

On the other hand, “Hee” sound is very breathy and requires your vocal cords to widen and decompress, similarly to how a victory sign with your fingers would look.

Practice producing “Gee-Hee” sound to learn to control your vocal cords and master a breathy voice. It will help you to attain a breathy voice at will.

Train your respiratory system to maintain a breathy tone

To maintain a breathy tone you will need to output more air than usual. Training your diaphragm and expanding lung capacity will allow prolonging a breathy voice.

To produce more air you will want to learn to use your diaphragm. When speaking the diaphragm ought to lower and your shoulders and chest shouldn’t rise much.

To strengthen the diaphragm try placing a book onto the belly while laying down and breathe using the diaphragm.

The exercise will help to utilize your diaphragm better and will give more air for maintaining the breathy tone in the voice.
